negative capability...check it out! by Urinals
This is a compilation of everything Urinals...a highly-influential, late '70s, LA art-damaged, punk trio. Lead singer/songwriter/bass player John Talley-Jones is the driving force behind the group and responsible for some of the most original music to come out of the LA scene. It was like Pink Flag-era Wire playing Lenny Kaye's Nuggets comp on toy instruments. Their first three releases (two eps and a single) are the first ten tracks on this comp and you could stop there...while that probably adds up to less than half an hour of music it is worth it's weight in gold. Every track is complete genius. Standout cuts are the spooky psych of Hologram; the instrumental classic Surfin' With The Shah; the Jeffrey Lea Pierce favorite Black Hole; and one of my all time favorites, Sex, which could pass for an Electric Prunes cover.
The band changed their name to 100 Flowers back in the day then broke up. Two thirds of the group formed Radwaste in the mid 80s then the original trio re-formed in the late 90s. The guitarist quickly remembered he didn't like the other guys so he quit and a succession of replacements followed. They then went by the name Chairs of Perception for a bit but that's now going to change in 2008 as they revert back to the Urinals. John and his wife Kathy have been working on a book about their colorful history which should be completed and out sometime next year. In the meantime...go get this comp! (Since it's out-of-print, I'm listing the digital download) Buy it here: Negative Capability...Check it Out!
